Resveratrol, is a potent antioxidant and free radical with scavenging properties. It has a positive effect on our mitochondria ( known as the powerhouse of our cells ). It also suppresses tumor necrosis factor and other proinflammatory molecules which cause autoimmune disease. It’s protective action against cancer is explained by its inhibition of hypoxia-inducible factor alpha, a protein which when either dysregulated or overexpressed has been heavily implicated in cancer biology. Resveratrol also inhibits expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Without VEGF solid cancers cannot grow or past a limited size.
One of the ways it is postulated that resveratrol is effective in preventing or improving cardiac health is by preventing the aggregation of platelets
It is also postulated that resveratrol can increase stress resistance and slow down the aging process to increase the lifespan in diverse organisms from microorganisms to vertebrates.
Resveratrol my induce neuroprotective effects by reducing oxidative damage and chronic inflammation apart from improving vascular function and activating longevity genes, it also has the ability to promote the activity of neurotrophic factors.
