Testosterone Replacement Therapy for Men

Testosterone Replacement Therapy for Men at The Lee Clinic

The Lee Clinic has been a leader in hormone replacement therapy in Northern Virginia for over 40 years. Founded by Dr. William Lee, MD — a pioneer in hormone medicine since the early 1990s — the clinic is now led by his daughter, Dr. Megan Lee, DO, who brings that same philosophy into a modern, evidence-based practice: that hormones matter, and that feeling like yourself again is not too much to ask.

Why Testosterone Matters

Testosterone is far more than a sex hormone. It is a foundational driver of energy, muscle mass, mood, cognitive sharpness, cardiovascular health, and metabolic function. When it declines — as it does gradually in every man beginning after age 25, at a rate of roughly 2% per year — the effects are wide-reaching and often go unrecognized for years.

By the time most men notice the changes, their testosterone levels may have been declining for a decade or more. The good news is that testosterone replacement therapy, when done correctly, is safe, effective, and life-changing for the right candidate.

Signs You May Have Low Testosterone

Men often attribute the symptoms of low testosterone to stress, aging, or simply "getting older." While these symptoms are common, they are not inevitable — and they are treatable.

You may have low testosterone if you are experiencing:

Low sex drive or decreased sexual performance · Loss of muscle mass and difficulty building strength despite exercise · Persistent fatigue and low energy · Depression or low mood · Increased body fat, particularly around the midsection · Memory loss or difficulty concentrating · Sleep disturbances · Hair loss · Irritability or emotional flatness · Reduced motivation or drive · Joint aches and pains

Men over 50 have a significantly higher rate of depression than younger men — and declining testosterone is a frequently overlooked contributor.

How Do I Know If My Testosterone Is Low?

Diagnosis is based on both laboratory testing and your symptoms — not on numbers alone. A testosterone level that falls within the broad "normal" reference range on a lab report may still be suboptimal for you as an individual. We look at total testosterone, free testosterone, estradiol, DHEA-S, and other relevant markers, and we interpret them in the context of how you actually feel.

If you have been told your testosterone is "normal" but you still feel off, it is worth a second look. Reference ranges are population averages — they are not the same as optimal.

How Testosterone Replacement Therapy Can Help

Testosterone replacement therapy restores levels to a healthy, functional range — not a supraphysiologic one. When balanced correctly, it can produce significant improvements in energy, mood, libido, muscle mass, body composition, cognitive clarity, and overall quality of life.

Treatment is personalized based on your labs and symptoms. We monitor closely and adjust over time to make sure you are responding well and that all hormones remain in balance.

What Does Treatment Look Like?

Every patient begins with a comprehensive evaluation — a full symptom history, physical assessment, and laboratory workup. From there, we design a treatment plan specific to you. Follow-up lab testing is a regular part of care, ensuring we stay within optimal ranges and that you continue to feel your best.

Our first-line approach uses testosterone, and where indicated, estradiol and DHEA — hormones available through standard pharmacies and often covered by insurance. Compounding is available when a patient's clinical needs require it, but it is not our default.

Is Testosterone Replacement Therapy Safe?

Yes — when properly monitored. The key is individualized evaluation, appropriate dosing, and regular follow-up. Concerns about testosterone therapy — including effects on the heart, prostate, and red blood cell count — are real considerations that we take seriously and monitor for. For most healthy men who are good candidates, the benefits of optimized testosterone far outweigh the risks of leaving low testosterone untreated.

Cost and Insurance

We believe hormone replacement therapy should be accessible. Our approach is designed with that in mind:

Testosterone for men is an FDA-approved medication and is covered by most insurance plans when low testosterone is documented, meaning your out-of-pocket cost is often no more than a standard prescription copay.

Compounding is used only when a patient's clinical needs cannot be met by a commercially available product. Compounded medications are not covered by insurance, and we will always discuss cost and options with you before going that route.
